Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (
BMKG
) revealed that there were 30 thousand
earthquake
which rocked Indonesia in a year. This is an important note for awareness of major disasters in the future.
Head of BMKG Teuku Faisal Fathani said that earthquake activity in Indonesia has several characteristics, including small magnitude earthquakes that are often felt, and earthquakes that have a devastating impact on densely populated areas.

Faisal explained that the high level of earthquake activity in Indonesia cannot be separated from its geographical position.Indonesia is in the Pacific ring of fire, and is on four active tectonic plates, namely the Indo-Australian, Eurasian, Philippine and Pacific plates.
This complex interaction causes Indonesia to have 13 subduction segments and more than 295 active faults.Contributes to the potential for large earthquakes in various regions.
“With 30 thousand earthquakes every year, Indonesia is one of the most active seismic regions in the world. This condition is a permanent alarm that preparedness must become a national culture, not just a momentary reaction,” said Faisal at the opening of the 2025 National Earthquake and Tsunami School on Tuesday (18/11).
He added that disaster mitigation is not only about vigilance, but also the community’s ability to understand danger signs and respond quickly to minimize the risk of casualties.
Megathrust threat
Faisal previously also said that there was a potential serious threat from the megathrust surrounding Indonesia. He said there are three megathrust zones in the country that have the potential to trigger major disasters.
“Our country is at the meeting point of three active plates in the world with 13 megathrust segments, some of which have not yet released their tectonic energy. This means that the potential for a large earthquake is still possible at any time,” said Faisal.
Of the dozens of zones, said Faisal, there are three megathrust zones that have not experienced a large earthquake in hundreds of years. The three zones are the Mentawai-Siberut Megathrust, the Sunda Strait-Banten Megathrust, and the Sumba Megathrust.
He explained that the three megathrust zones are currently in the process of accumulating tectonic energy. He then warned that a large earthquake could happen at any time without prediction.
“It is strongly suspected that currently there is a process of accumulation of tectonic energy which could release a large earthquake at any time without being predicted,” he said, as reported by Detik.
Megathrust zones are areas where Earth’s tectonic plates meet at subduction zones or points where one plate slides under another plate, which is generally in the ocean.
Throughout history, megathrusts have caused some of the world’s largest and most destructive earthquakes and tsunamis. Some prominent examples include the Sunda Megathrust in Indonesia, the Peru-Chile Trench in South America, the Nankai Trench in Japan, and the Cascadia subduction zone in the Pacific Northwest of North America.
Megathrust has the potential to produce strong earthquakes and trigger devastating tsunamis. It is estimated that this zone can ‘break’ repeatedly with time lags of up to hundreds of years.
