Rafflesia hasseltii is a rare and protected species of Rafflesia flower. This species can only be found in certain areas in Indonesia.
This species depends on a particular host plant. This makes the Rafflesia hasseltii population very vulnerable to habitat destruction and other threats.
A guide was seen crying in a video uploaded by the Oxford University Instagram account, @oxford_uni, when he found the Rafflesia hasseltii flower.Septian Andriki said that he had spent 13 years looking for the Rafflesia hasseltii flower.
“For 13 years. I am very lucky,” said Deki, his nickname, as reported
Sec
(20/11).
He discovered the flower with Dr Chris Thorogood, Deputy Director and Head of Science at Oxford University Botanic Gardens and Arboretum. The team walked day and night through the Sumatran rainforest in search of Rafflesia hasseltii.
“I had the opportunity to see the tiger-faced Rafflesia mushroom (Rafflesia Hasseltii). Maybe I was very lucky, and I would like to thank my family and relatives,” said the team.
“And my friends who have helped and supported my hard work over several years are waiting and being patient about where and when this flower blooms,” they continued.
In the middle of the year, scientists also managed to find Rafflesia hasseltii in Tanjung Agung Village, Karang Jaya District, Muratara, South Sumatra.
Faried, Head of SPTN 5 BBTNKS, said the flower was found in a forest far from residential areas.
“The flower was discovered by a resident named Bendriansyah while carrying out an independent patrol. The flower bloomed in a forest in the TNKS (Kerinci Sebelat National Park) area which is 10 km from residential areas,” said Faried.
Faried explained that the Rafflesia hasseltii flower that was found grew to a height of 12 cm, with a diameter of 52 cm and flower petals measuring 16 cm wide. The length of the spines reaches 15 cm.
“This is the first time Rafflesia Hasseltii has bloomed in the Tanjung Agung area. This discovery itself shows the importance of community involvement in efforts to protect and monitor biodiversity, especially protected endemic species,” he explained.
