Amarulla Octavian was officially appointed as Deputy Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (
BRIN
), on Monday (10/11).He was appointed together with Arif Satria who currently holds the position of Head of BRIN.
Amarulla is not new to BRIN.He previously served as Deputy Head of BRIN since 2023 after leaving his position as Chancellor of the Defense University (Unhan).

Born on October 24 1965, Amarulla is a retired Indonesian Navy officer with the rank of Vice Admiral (Laksdya) as well as a scientist in the Indonesian Defense Sector.He is an alumnus of the Naval Academy (AAL) class XXXIII/1988. This three-star general’s last position was Chancellor of the 7th Defense University.
He was previously recorded as having held a number of important positions.Amarulla is a former aide to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
Amarulla received a Doctoral degree from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia in 2013. His dissertation was entitled ‘Globalization and Transformation of Indonesian Navy Educational Institutions: A Sociological Study of the Indonesian Navy Command Staff College’.
According to various sources, apart from receiving military education, he started his track record after graduating from the Naval Technology College in 2001, and earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering.Then, he earned a master’s degree from Universite Paris-Pantheon-Assas, France in 2006.
Seven years later or in 2013, Amarulla received a doctorate from the Department of Sociology, University of Indonesia.
He has had a career as an academic teacher since 2003. At that time, Amarulla was an expert assistant at the Naval Technology College, and continued until he achieved the rank of lecturer in 2008.
Then, his career as an academic teacher continued at the Defense University.He became a permanent lecturer in 2014, and in 2020 he was appointed as rector.
After three years as Chancellor of IDU, he continued his career as Deputy Head of BRIN in 2023. He was then re-elected and officially appointed to the same position today.
