The fake website targets users in different regions, indicating the attacker’s attempt to reach a global audience.
Kaspersky said cybercriminals created a malicious website offering online access to the Avatar 3 film.
The attackers placed particular emphasis on localization, publishing sites in multiple languages to attract users from different countries.
However, translations on these sites are often poor and contain grammatical errors and inconsistencies, which can be indicators of fraudulent activity.
When users try to play a video, they are shown a fake media player and asked to register to get full or unlimited access to the movie.
As part of the registration process, users are asked to provide personal information, including email addresses and mobile phone numbers.
At a later stage, fraudsters may request additional data, including payment details, under the guise of activating a free trial.
This raises the risk of credential breaches, especially if users reuse passwords across multiple services. As a result, users can also experience financial losses.
“Cybercriminals consistently exploit major film premieres to attract users’ attention and increase the effectiveness of their schemes. We recommend accessing films only through official platforms and be careful when encountering websites that ask for personal information or payment,” Altukhova, senior web content analyst at Kaspersky said in a statement, Friday (19/12).
Previously, cybercriminals also used a similar method by taking advantage of the launch of the latest season of the popular TV series Stranger Things.
Furthermore, Kaspersky provides several tips to avoid this kind of fraud. Here are the tips:
– Pay attention to the film’s official release date in theaters, streaming services, TV, DVD, or other sources.
– Check the authenticity of the website before entering personal data and only use official web pages to watch or download movies.Double-check the URL format and spelling of the company name.
– Use a reliable security solution that identifies malicious attachments and blocks phishing sites.
– Avoid links that promise early content delivery, and if you have any doubts about
content authenticity, check with your entertainment provider.
