On the island of Java, the weather is predicted to be light rain in almost all major cities, starting from Serang, Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang and Yogyakarta.Meanwhile, people in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) are asked to be alert for rain which can be accompanied by lightning.
Next, shifting to Kalimantan Island, light rain is predicted to occur in Palangka Raya, Samarinda and Banjarmasin.”Be aware of thunderstorms that can occur in Tanjung Selor and Pontianak,” he said.
Moving on to the Bali and Nusa Tenggara regions, he said, the weather is predicted to be light rain for the cities of Denpasar and Mataram, while Kupang will be hit by rain accompanied by lightning.
Then for Sulawesi Island, the weather is predicted to be light rain in the Palu, Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate, Kendari and Makassar areas, while Mamuju has the potential for moderate intensity rain.
Moving to eastern Indonesia, the weather in the cities of Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura and Jayawijaya is predicted to have light rain, while Merauke City has the potential for moderate intensity rain.
Head of BMKG Teuku Faisal Fathani reminded the public to be alert to the types of disasters that dominate the run-up to Christmas and New Year (Nataru), namely extreme rain, strong winds, and other phenomena such as destructive lightning, tornadoes, hail and limited visibility which often disrupt flights and shipping.
“The trend continues to increase. West Java leads the frequency of extreme rain and strong winds, followed by Central Java and East Java. This must be our common concern,” said Faisal.
For the period from the 2nd week of December to the beginning of January, BMKG also estimates that the Asian Monsoon will start to become active, thereby increasing rainfall in Indonesia.Apart from that, the emergence of the Madden Julian Oscillation atmospheric anomaly, Kelvin waves and the Rossby Equator can trigger extreme rain.
The presence of the Siberian cold front also strengthens the intensity of rain, with tropical cyclone seeds potentially growing in the southern region of Indonesia.Areas that need to be alert to the formation of cyclone seeds include Bengkulu, Lampung, Banten, DKI Jakarta, Java-Bali, NTB, NTT, Maluku, South and Central Papua.
