Earthquake
Tectonics measuring M6.2 rocked the southern region
Bolaang Mongondow
, North Sulawesi, Monday (17/11) at 19.12 WIB.
Based on the latest analysis by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter of the earthquake was in the sea, around 37 kilometers southeast of Bolaang Uki, with a depth of 115 kilometers.Even though it had a significant magnitude, this earthquake certainly did not have the potential for a tsunami.
BMKG explained that the earthquake was categorized as a medium earthquake triggered by deep deformation
Sangihe Slab
, namely the subducting plate zone in the northern part of Sulawesi.

This deformation process occurs when the inside of the plate experiences pressure and changes shape due to collisions or tectonic forces below the earth’s surface.
Analysis of the source mechanism also shows that the earthquake had an upward shear type of movement (
oblique-thrust
).This type of movement indicates a combination of pushing and shearing forces on the plate, which commonly occurs in areas with active tectonic dynamics such as northern Sulawesi.
Earthquake vibrations were felt in a number of areas with different intensities. In Bone Bolango, the shaking was recorded on the MMI III-IV scale, which indicates that the vibration was quite strong and could be felt by many people in the house.
Meanwhile, the Gorontalo, Kotamobagu and Bolaang Mongondow regencies felt the III MMI shock, equivalent to a vibration sensation like a large truck passing by.
Several other areas such as Ampana, Buol, Tidore, Taliabu Island, Sula Islands, South Halmahera, and Ternate City experienced the impact of shocks on the II-III MMI scale, which could still be felt inside the house but did not cause significant damage.
BMKG emphasized that based on modeling results, this earthquake did not pose a tsunami threat.Apart from that, as of 19.42 WIB, monitoring activities had not detected any aftershocks or
aftershock
.
However, BMKG urges the public to remain calm, but alert, and ensure that residential buildings are safe from potential damage before returning to normal activities.
