on Biak Island, Papua.Actually, what is the purpose of building this rocket launch area?
Acting Deputy for BRIN Development Policy Anugerah Widiyanto explained that the construction of the Spaceport has a strong legal basis.
These foundations include Law Number 21 of 2013 concerning Space, Presidential Regulation Number 45 of 2017 concerning the Master Plan for the Implementation of Space 2016-2040, and Government Regulation Number 7 of 2023 concerning Mastery of Space Technology which emphasizes aspects

“The Draft Government Regulation (RPP) regarding the Implementation of Space Airports has completed the harmonization process and is ready to become the operational basis for development,” said Anugerah, at the National Space Airport Coordination Meeting in Jakarta, Friday (19/12), reported on BRIN’s official website.
“Apart from that, the space master plan needs to be updated until 2045 so that it is in line with the national development vision,” he continued.
According to Anugerah, studies on the development of the Spaceport in Biak have been carried out since 1990 and need to be updated according to technological developments, national needs and environmental conditions.
He explained that Biak Island was chosen as the location for the rocket launch area because it has geographical advantages. This island is considered close to the equator, thus providing energy and cost efficiency for launching rockets into low earth orbit (LEO).
In addition, the increasing global space economy opens up great opportunities for Indonesia to play a more active role in the space launch and services industry.
“The global space economy is estimated to reach around five percent of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The construction of the Spaceport in Biak will have a multiplier effect for the region, starting from job creation, economic growth, to strengthening space diplomacy,” he explained.
In the National Coordination Meeting, the rocket launch process at BRIN was also explained, starting from rocket design and manufacturing, the readiness verification process and plans for determining

, rocket preparation, to launch and post-launch implementation.
All of these stages emphasize aspects of safety, security and cross-agency coordination.
The construction of this rocket launch area also requires basic infrastructure support, including access to electricity, telecommunications networks, international standard health facilities, as well as logistics and security systems.
Head of BRINĀ Arif Satria emphasized that the development of the Spaceport is a strategic mandate from the state to strengthen Indonesia’s independence in access to space.
“BRIN is currently formulating derivative regulations so that after ratifying the RPP, location determination and development implementation can be carried out immediately, including BRIN’s land clearing in Biak which is planned to start in 2026,” said Arif.
He emphasized that the development of the Spaceport is in line with the vision of Golden Indonesia 2045, especially in the development of the space economy, space environment and space security, and is expected to be able to strengthen Indonesia’s position at the global level.
