Altman collaborated with legendary former Apple designer, Jony Ive, to develop their first hardware.According to him, this is an effort to combine artificial intelligence (AI) with premium class industrial design.

This was revealed by Altman and Ive during an interview with Laurene Powell Jobs at the 2025 Emerson Collective Demo Day event in San Francisco.On that occasion, they revealed that they were currently making a prototype of the device.
Altman described the design as simple, beautiful, and fun.He said he was very enthusiastic about the initial prototype.
“There was a previous prototype that made us quite enthusiastic, but we didn’t feel it was right yet,” said Altman, reported by The Verge, Monday (24/11).
However, now they are re-developing the prototype.From rumors circulating, this device will come without a screen, and will be the size of a smartphone in general.
On that occasion, Ive revealed that this device would likely be launched in less than two years.
According to Ive, the design of this new cellphone replacement device will be much simpler and unique.He described this new device as not making users feel ‘intimidated’.
“I like solutions that seem almost naive in their simplicity, and I also like really smart, sophisticated products that you want to touch, that don’t make you feel intimidated, and that you want to use casually, that you use almost without thinking, that are just tools,” Ive said.
“I hope that when people see it, they will say, ‘That’s it!'” said Altman, continuing with Ive agreeing.
Reporting from TechCrunch, at the beginning of this year, OpenAI acquired Ive’s design startup, IO, with the aim of bringing artificial intelligence (AI) to the wider community through technological tools.
While OpenAI did not share specific details about the device, it is currently still a prototype.Ive and Altman were passionate about describing the product based on its “vibe.”Reportedly the device will be without a screen and will be about the size of a smartphone.
Altman compared the device to the iPhone, praising Apple’s smartphone as the “peak achievement of consumer products” to date.He said he can define his life as before or after the iPhone.
However, he complains that modern technology is filled with distractions.Altman believes that today’s devices suffer from bright, flashing notifications and dopamine-chasing social media apps.
“I don’t think it makes our lives calm and peaceful, and only allows us to focus on our own affairs,” he explained.
He said the ideal device should be able to distill information for users, who would trust AI to carry out tasks over long periods of time.
The device must also understand context and know the best times to display information and request input.
“You believe it as time goes by, and do have a tremendous sense of context about your entire life,” adds Altman.
