Tropical Cyclone Seed 93S began to form on December 11 at 07.00 WIB in the Indian Ocean south of Bali-West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).The maximum wind speed around the system is 15 knots or around 28 km/hour and the minimum pressure is around 1010 hPa.
“The spawn of Tropical Cyclone 93S in the Indian Ocean south of East Java had an indirect impact in the form of rain with moderate to heavy intensity and strong winds in the Banten region, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali and West Nusa Tenggara,” said BMKG in its upload on Instagram, Tuesday (16/12).
According to BMKG, the potential for Tropical Cyclone Seed 93S to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours is in the low probability category, with a stationary movement direction.
Tropical Cyclone Bakung
Apart from that, BMKG also revealed that Tropical Cyclone Bakung and Tropical Cyclone Seed 95S also had a significant influence on weather conditions in Indonesia.
According to BMKG, the combination of these three weather systems has the potential to increase rainfall accompanied by strong winds and high sea waves in various areas.
BMKG noted that in the last three days a number of areas have experienced very heavy rain, including West Sumatra with rainfall reaching 121 millimeters/day, Bali 110 millimeters/day, and Riau 106 millimeters/day.
This condition also triggers hydrometeorological disasters such as floods, inundation, landslides, and transportation disruptions in a number of areas.
Meteorologically, Tropical Cyclone Bakung was observed in the Indian Ocean southwest of Lampung with a maximum wind speed of 60 knots and a minimum pressure of 981 hPa.
This system still has the potential to cause indirect impacts in the form of moderate to heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, especially in the Bengkulu and Lampung areas.
Meanwhile, Tropical Cyclone Seed 95S in the Arafuru Sea southwest of South Papua formed a convergence area which had an impact on increasing the potential for rain in Southeast Maluku and South Papua.
BMKG also identified other supporting factors in the form of negative Dipole Mode (-0.63), Equatorial Kelvin and Rossby Wave activity, high air humidity, and relatively unstable atmospheric conditions. This combination of factors is considered capable of triggering significant growth of rain clouds.
For the period 16-18 December 2025, BMKG has set a moderate rain alert status in a number of areas, including West Sumatra, Jambi, South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten, DKI Jakarta, most of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, North Maluku, and Papua.
Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rain alert status is in effect in Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, Bengkulu, West Java, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West and East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, Papua Mountains and South Papua.
Strong winds also have the potential to occur in Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bangka Belitung Islands, Lampung, Banten, DKI Jakarta, West Java, East Java and Bali.
Entering the period 19-22 December 2025, the potential for heavy to very heavy rain will continue, especially in Lampung, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, South Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua Mountains and South Papua.Meanwhile, moderate rain has the potential to spread across most of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, North Maluku and Papua.
BMKG urges the public to increase awareness of the potential for extreme weather, stay away from open areas and fragile infrastructure during rain accompanied by lightning or strong winds, and be aware of the risk of floods, flash floods and landslides.
