Elon Musk Wants to Make X a Global SuperApp, Similar to Chinese Apps

become a global superapp, emulating WeChat’s dominance in China which combines social services, payments and content publishing in one ecosystem.
In the People by WTF podcast with Nikhil Kamath, Musk said he wanted to build an application like an international version of WeChat.This means that this application will be integrated with communication and financial features so that users can “spend their lives” in one application.

According to Musk, to date there is no application similar to WeChat anywhere else in the world.WeChat, known locally as Weixin, offers a variety of native features, including social media, content, and payments, as well as third-party services in the form of mini-programs.
These small apps give more than 1.4 billion monthly active users access to a variety of services, such as online shopping, mobile gaming and transportation booking.
Just like other Chinese social media platforms, Weixin operates under strict government censorship, while X is blocked in the country.
This is not the first time Musk has expressed his desire to expand X to match the scale of WeChat.After Twitter changed its name to X in July 2023, Musk spoke about his intention to emulate WeChat as a model for X.
“Perhaps the Twitter acquisition could also be an opportunity to revisit X.com’s original plans,” Musk said at the time.
In January, X partnered with Visa to launch X Money, a financial services feature expected to be available later this year.
According to Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X at the time, this feature would enable peer-to-peer payments via debit cards and facilitate fund transfers to bank accounts.
X has also introduced audio and video calling capabilities, driven by Musk’s belief that video will dominate online interactions.
“Most of the interactions will be real-time video with (artificial intelligence),” he said, adding that “text only accounts for a fairly small percentage.”
