The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed that the period December 2025-January 2026 has entered the phase
peak rainy season

.
Plt.BMKG Principal Secretary Guswanto said that the period December 2025 to January 2026 coincides with the peak of the rainy season, thereby increasing the potential for high to very high rainfall in a number of areas.

Some areas that need to receive daily are Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, South Sulawesi, South Papua, and most of Kalimantan.
He added that his party had also mapped the weather dynamics during the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) period in three periods, namely 15-22 December which was dominated by heavy rain;December 22-29 which tends to decrease;and 29 December-10 January which again increased as the peak of the rainy season shifted to Java.
“What you need to be careful of is the high intensity of rain, strong winds, high waves, as well as the potential indirect impact of tropical cyclone seeds. These conditions can affect land, sea and air transportation activities during Christmas,” said Guswanto in a statement, Tuesday (9/12).
During this period, Guswanto said a number of atmospheric phenomena were predicted to be active simultaneously during the Nataru period, such as the Asian Monsoon, Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO), Kelvin and Rossby atmospheric waves, weak La Niña, as well as the emergence of tropical cyclone seeds 93W and 91S which could strengthen the intensity of rain and strong winds in various regions.
BMKG revealed, based on the results of monitoring Atmospheric and Ocean Dynamics in November 2025, sea surface temperatures in the Equatorial Central Pacific or Nino3.4 region showed that ENSO was in the weak La Niña phase with an ENSO index of -0.77.
Meanwhile, sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean show that the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is in the negative IOD phase with a Dipole Mode Index (DMI) value of -0.83.
“ENSO predictions show that a weak La Nina will continue until early 2026. Meanwhile, the IOD is predicted to be in a negative IOD condition until the end of 2025,” wrote BMKG in its 2025/2026 Rainy Season Prediction Update.
BMKG predicts that the peak of the rainy season in Java, Sulawesi and Maluku-Papua will arrive earlier, while Sumatra and Bali will arrive later compared to previous predictions.
Apart from that, the duration of the rainy season is also predicted to be shorter than the original prediction in most of the updated regions, especially Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi.Several areas in Maluku, West Papua, Central Papua, Mountain Papua and Papua have been updated to have a year-round rainy season.
