“Disruption of telecommunications services caused by flooding has resulted in the shutdown of 495 sites or around 1.42 percent of the total 34,660 existing sites in North Sumatra Province,” said Komdigi’s official statement, Thursday (27/11).
According to Komdigi, XLSmart reported alarm data to PMT on Wednesday (26/11) which stated that 80 sites or around 0.19 percent of their total 8,746 existing sites in North Sumatra were affected by flooding.
Meanwhile, Indosat reported that 79 sites or 0.77 percent of their total 10,174 existing sites in North Sumatra were also affected by the disaster. Then, Telkomsel said that 336 of their sites in North Sumatra were affected by flooding.
“The sites that were affected and experienced downturns were caused by power outages from PLN and transmission problems,” said Komdigi.
According to Komdigi, currently cellular operators are trying to restore the affected sites using generators until electricity flows return to normal. However, this is also still hampered by road access which is still affected by flooding, thus hampering the mobilization of generators to the location.
Cellular operators have also attempted to restore sites that are down due to transmission disruptions by routing them to several points that can still be served and are currently still being verified for further checking.
“Komdigi, through the Directorate of Digital Infrastructure Control, continues to monitor the quality of telecommunications services following the floods and landslides in North Sumatra,” he concluded.
