“There are already indications that developed countries will lack the electricity to support AI,” he continued.
According to him, Indonesia’s geographical advantages and natural resources can be the key to facing this era.He said that with the potential of solar energy in the eastern region, geothermal energy in Java and Sumatra, and wind power in coastal areas, Indonesia has strong capital to build a clean energy-based data center ecosystem.
He explained that the government had prepared a legal basis to encourage environmentally friendly investment, through Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 110 of 2025 concerning Carbon Trading (
Carbon Trading Framework
).
These regulations allow technology companies, including data center operators and AI developers, to offset their operational carbon emissions with verified domestic carbon credits.
Several global technology giants such as Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are said to have explored renewable energy-based data center investment opportunities in Indonesia.
“For AI and data centers, Indonesia has business opportunities, what are the opportunities? Many such as Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, and so on, are looking for opportunities to offset their electricity usage,”
“What is the offset? Offset with carbon credits from countries like Indonesia, there are already signs that energy use is large. So there is an opportunity for Indonesia to become one of the countries they hope for,” he continued.
This step is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s vision to make Indonesia a regional center for digital industry and green energy by 2030.
Hashim emphasized that the key to success in this transformation is collaboration between the government, private sector and global investors to ensure AI infrastructure grows without compromising national climate commitments.
“The future of AI is not just intelligent algorithms, it is intelligent energy,” he concluded.
