According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in addition to text messaging, Apple wants to enable 5G NTN (non-terrestrial network) support on its iPhones, which would allow cell towers to get increased coverage by leveraging satellites.
For anyone needing directions in remote areas without a cellular or Wi-Fi connection, Apple is reportedly planning to introduce satellite connectivity to Apple Maps.
In addition to these updates, Gurman also reports that Apple is researching a “natural use” fix where users won’t have to point their iPhones at the sky to connect to satellite networks.
In contrast, iPhone can stay connected even when there is no clear view of the sky, such as in an indoor environment.
From the developer side, Gurman said that Apple is also developing an API that allows application developers to add satellite connections.
