Jakarta
as the most populous city in the world with 42 million residents in 2025. This figure is above Dhaka, Bangladesh and Tokyo, Japan in the next position.
This report issued by the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs is entitled World Urbanization Prospects 2025. This report provides population data as well as analysis of population trends and development outcomes for all
countries and regions in the world.

In this report it is stated that 9 of the 10 most populous cities in the world are in Asia.The only country outside Asia on the list is Cairo, Egypt.
Jakarta is named as the most populous city in the report with 42 million residents, followed by Dhaka which has 37 million residents and Tokyo which has 33.4 million residents.
Mexico City, Mexico and Sao Paulo, Brazil were two cities from Latin America that were on the list in 2000. However, in 2010, these two cities were replaced by Cairo and Shanghai, China, which experienced rapid population growth.
This report states that Tokyo, which was in first place in 2000, fell to third place after experiencing slowing population growth over the last quarter century.The population of this city is even predicted to continue to shrink to 30.7 million residents in 2050.
Apart from Tokyo, Seoul in South Korea is also the most populous city which has experienced a decline in population.
On the other hand, the fastest population growth is experienced by Dhaka and Shanghai with a projection of reaching 5 percent per year between 2025 and 2050.
By the middle of the century, Dhaka is even expected to overtake Jakarta as the most populous city in the world.Meanwhile, Shanghai is expected to rise from 5th to 3rd position.
Rapid population growth is also experienced by the city of Karachi, Pakistan.This city, which is not yet on the list of most populous cities, is expected to enter the top ranks between 2025 and 2030.
In 2050, this city is expected to have 33 million residents and be in 5th position.
