One of the founding figures of modern artificial intelligence, and a key figure at Meta Platform, announced he will be leaving the company at the end of this year to launch his new AI startup.
He has been an important part of Meta’s ambitions for more than a decade. He served as director of FAIR for five years and as the company’s principal AI scientist for seven years.
LeCun is leading breakthroughs in deep learning, computer vision, and large-scale language modeling that underlie products like Instagram, and Meta AI.
Reporting from SCMP, LeCun is now 65 years old.He announced that his latest venture will focus on advanced machine intelligence (AMI) research, a project he is developing with colleagues at FAIR and New York University.
LeCun said he will partner with Meta on the project, reflecting the company’s continued interest and support for AMI’s long-term goals.
“The creation of FAIR is my proudest non-technical accomplishment,” he wrote.
“FAIR’s impact on Meta, the field of artificial intelligence, and the world at large has been extraordinary,” he continued.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and CTO Andrew Bosworth both acknowledged that LeCun played a critical role in building the foundation of Meta’s current infrastructure, including its legacy open-source Llama model, which has become a milestone in the global AI research community.
LeCun is considered one of the “founding fathers” of deep learning, along with Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, the triumvirate who won the 2018 Turing Award, a Nobel Prize-level award in computing.
