Laksana Tri Handoko officially relinquishes his position as Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (
BRIN
) on Tuesday (11/11).He said there was some homework that he handed over to his successor, Arif Satria.
“There’s still a lot (of homework), we can’t possibly finish it, right? There’s a lot of it in the memo, I wrote it down,” said Handoko after handing over the position of Head of BRIN at the BRIN Office, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (11/11).
“If it’s really fundamental, maybe it doesn’t exist anymore. But it’s incremental improvement. Improvement must continue to exist,” he added.

Apart from relinquishing the position of Head of BRIN, on this occasion Handoko was also appointed as a functional research officer at the main expert level.This means that he will return to being a researcher as before.
Handoko explained that he has a background in theoretical physics and will pursue a career under the Nanotechnology and Materials Research Organization at BRIN.
“Quantum physics research center. My field is theoretical and computational physics,” he said.
Handoko’s appointment as the main expert researcher was carried out based on the Presidential Decree of the Republic of Indonesia No.36 M/F of 2025 concerning appointments to Main Expert Functional Positions.Handoko was appointed by the new Head of BRIN Arif Satria, who is the Chancellor of the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB).
Profile of Laksana Tri Handoko
Before becoming Head of BRIN, Handoko served as Head of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI).
Handoko was born in Malang on May 7 1968. He was a physics major at Kumamoto University, Japan, in 1993. Before going to Japan, Handoko is known to have studied for several months at the Bandung Institute of Technology.
At that time, Handoko was one of the students selected for the OFP IV program from the Indonesian Ministry of Research and Technology in the era of President B.J.Habibie.
After graduating, Handoko then continued his master’s studies in theoretical physics at Hiroshima University, Japan.At the same university, Laksana also succeeded in obtaining a doctorate in the field of theoretical particle physics or high energy physics.
After completing his studies, Handoko worked as a researcher at a number of research institutions such as The Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics ICTP;Deutsches Elektronen-Synchroton (DESY);Department of Physics – Yonsei University;to ICTP Simons Associate.
In 1987, Handoko became part of the Physics Research Center.Several years later, he was appointed Head of the Physics Research Center’s Theoretical and Computational Physicist Group.
In 2012, Handoko was also trusted to be the Head of the LIPI Informatics Research Center.Two years later, he was appointed Deputy for Engineering Sciences (IPT) LIPI.
Ultimately, the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education Mohamad Nasir appointed Handoko as Head of LIPI in 2018.
