, here is a list of celestial phenomena in December 2025:
Super Cold Moon
December’s Full Moon has the traditional name Cold Moon because it begins winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
Some names for the December Full Moon in Old English and Anglo-Saxon are Moon Before Yule and Long Night Moon. Both names refer to the winter solstice and the ancient celebration of Yule.Another Celtic name is Oak Moon.
The full moon that occurred on December 5 is also the third Supermoon in a row since October.
A supermoon occurs when the Moon is at its closest distance to Earth (perigee). In this phenomenon, the Moon may appear slightly bigger and brighter than usual.
Geminid meteor shower
The Geminid meteor shower is known as one of the most spectacular meteor showers of the year. This meteor shower can produce views of up to 120 meteors per hour.
The peak of the Geminid meteor shower will occur on December 14-15.
This meteor shower is named after the constellation Gemini because the meteors seem to appear from that constellation in the sky.
Unlike most meteor showers associated with comets, the Geminid meteor shower originates from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. This asteroid takes 1.4 years to orbit the Sun.
Solstice
December will also be marked by the solstice phenomenon or solar solstice which occurs on December 21.In this phenomenon, the Sun reaches its southernmost point in a year.
The December Solstice marks the longest day in the hemisphere north of the equator.Meanwhile, in the Southern Hemisphere, this is the longest day of the year and the beginning of summer.
The effects of shorter and longer days will depend on the location’s distance to the equator. In the tropics, the shortest and longest days will be less pronounced;in temperate zones, the shortest day is much shorter;and areas within the Arctic Circle experience polar night, when the Sun does not rise at all.
Ursid meteor shower
The Ursid meteor shower is active between December 17 and 24 every year. This year, the peak will take place on December 22-23.
During its peak period, this meteor shower will display up to 10 meteors per hour.
This meteor shower is called Ursid because the meteors seem to come from the direction of the Ursa Minor constellation in the sky. This meteor shower itself comes from comet 8P/Tuttle.
