Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (
BMKG
) Teuku Faisal Fathani revealed a serious threat
megathrust
which surrounds Indonesia.According to him, there are three megathrust zones in Indonesia which have the potential to erupt at any time and cause major disasters.
“Our country is at the meeting point of three active plates in the world with 13 megathrust segments, some of which have not yet released their tectonic energy. This means that the potential for a large earthquake is still possible to occur at any time,” said Faisal at the DPR RI Disaster Monitoring Team Meeting at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday (5/11), according to the official BMKG website.

Megathrust zones are areas where Earth’s tectonic plates meet at subduction zones, namely the point where one plate slides under another plate, which is usually in the ocean.
Megathrusts cause some of the largest and most destructive earthquakes and tsunamis in the world.Prominent examples include the Sunda Megathrust in Indonesia, the Peru-Chile Trench in South America, the Nankai Trough in Japan, and the Cascadia subduction zone in the Pacific Northwest of North America.
Megathrust has the potential to trigger a strong earthquake and devastating tsunami. This zone is predicted to ‘break’ repeatedly with intervals of up to hundreds of years.
Faisal said that of the dozens of zones, there are three megathrust zones where no major earthquake has occurred in hundreds of years, namely the Mentawai-Siberut Megathrust zone, the Sunda Strait-Banten Megathrust zone, and the Sumba Megathrust zone.
He said that the three megathrust zones are currently in the process of accumulating tectonic energy. He warned that a large earthquake could occur at any time without prediction.
“It is strongly suspected that currently there is a process of accumulation of tectonic energy which could release a large earthquake at any time without being predicted,” he explained, as reported by Detik.
Faisal said that throughout 2025 there would be 850 earthquakes recorded by BMKG.According to him, the threat of earthquakes in Indonesia is very real.
“Furthermore, based on data, there have been a significant 850 earthquakes that we can feel in 2025. This data shows that the threat of earthquakes in Indonesia is real and will always happen,” he explained.
