Indonesian people will soon be able to enjoy the service

This internet service, called People’s Internet, will be launched by SURGE, one of the winners of the 1.4 GHz frequency auction which took place some time ago.

To implement this service, SURGE collaborates with OREX SAI, a joint venture between NTT DOCOMO, INC.and NEC Corporation.
“Our goal is to provide affordable and high-speed Internet access that enables equal connectivity throughout Indonesia. Through our collaboration with OREX SAI, we are building a 5G FWA ecosystem supported by innovative technology,” said Yune Marketatmo, Main Director of SURGE in his statement, Wednesday (12/11).
“This partnership shows our commitment to bridging the digital divide and lifting Indonesia’s digital economy to the next level,” he added.
SURGE won the 1.4 GHz frequency auction for region I through its subsidiary, PT Telemediakomunikasi Pratama.
Fixed broadband penetration in Indonesia is known to still be among the lowest in ASEAN due to high costs.To close this gap, SURGE will offer 5G FWA services at a fixed rate of around IDR 100,000 per month, with speeds of up to 100 Mbps with no data limits and free installation.
SURGE plans to commission up to 4,800 base stations to OREX SAI for the initial implementation phase in 2026, including the network equipment and services required to build the FWA infrastructure.
Under the agreement, OREX SAI will provide the world’s first commercial 1.4 GHz Open RAN FWA system.
The system integrates Open RAN and 5G Core (5GC) technologies from NEC Corporation, ensuring a scalable and future-ready architecture for national implementation.
In parallel, PT Telemediakomunikasi Pratama has signed agreements with 26 local distributors as part of its initial Go-To-Market plan targeting areas in Region I.
This agreement is an integral part of end-to-end ecosystem collaboration, facilitating the rapid provision of affordable broadband services to unserved and underserved households across Indonesia.
Currently, this People’s Internet service is still in the pre-registration stage.Apart from free installation fees, customers will also be given free modem rental.
