Faisal was born in Banda Aceh on May 26 1975. He is one of the most famous geotechnical experts in Indonesia because of his interest in natural dynamics and soil structure.
Faisal studied undergraduate at the Department of Civil Engineering, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), then continued his master’s studies in Geotechnical at the same university.
He then continued his studies in Japan, and completed his doctorate at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology in 2005, focusing on sabo engineering and landslide risk management.
After completing his studies in Japan, Faisal returned to his homeland and devoted himself as a lecturer at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering UGM.His academic career continued to climb until he was confirmed as a professor in the field of geotechnics.
Apart from teaching, Faisal actively researches and writes various scientific papers regarding disaster mitigation, soil sensor technology, and community-based early warning systems.
The development of the EWS (Early Warning System) landslide early detection tool, which is now known as the Early Warning System, is Faisal’s great work.
EWS uses geotechnical sensors that can detect ground movements in real-time, giving people time to evacuate before a disaster occurs. This technology has been used in several areas in Indonesia that are prone to landslides and has received international recognition.
For his extraordinary contribution, Faisal received various national awards. In 2019, the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP) designated him as one of the “Pancasila Icons” thanks to his dedication in developing disaster mitigation technology that saved many lives.
This award strengthens his reputation as a scientist who serves humanity.
Apart from that, Faisal pays great attention to inter-institutional synergy in disaster risk management. He encouraged closer collaboration between BMKG, Ministry of Transportation, BNPB and local governments to ensure weather and earthquake information can be immediately translated into real action on the ground.
Faisal’s strong background in engineering and disasters makes him understand that science must be on the side of human safety. Now, under his leadership, BMKG is expected to become more adaptive in facing the challenges of climate change and the increasing frequency of hydrometeorological disasters.
With international research experience and mature academic leadership, Prof.Teuku Faisal Fathani is believed to be able to bring BMKG into a more modern, responsive and innovative institution in protecting Indonesian people from the risks of extreme weather and other natural phenomena.
