Roblox
released a new security feature that requires users to undergo facial verification to estimate age.Later, users will only be able to chat with players their age.
“By requiring face-based age verification to access chat features, we are helping to create an age-appropriate ecosystem for every user, and we encourage the industry at large to adopt similar standards,” said Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer of Roblox in his statement, Wednesday (19/11).

In September, Roblox announced mandatory age verification to access communication features on its platform.Now, this feature is strengthened by age grouping, so that users can only chat with the same age group or similar age groups.
After verification, users will be grouped into U9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, or 21+.
For example, Elisa with an estimated age of 12 has access to chat with users aged 15 or younger in the game.Users aged 16 or older cannot start or join a chat.
Meanwhile, Marcus, with an approximate age of 18 years, has access to chat with users aged 16 years or older.He can also add younger siblings as Trusted Connections, as long as they are 13 years old or older.
To protect Roblox’s youngest users, the in-game chat feature will be automatically disabled for users under nine years old.
This feature can only be reactivated with parental consent after the age verification process.Meanwhile, chat features outside the game remain restricted to users under 13 years old.
All users can now voluntarily take part in the age estimation process to gain access to chat features.In the first week of December, Roblox will begin implementing approximate age requirements in select markets, including Australia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
In early January, the requirement will expand to all other markets where the chat feature is available.
How to verify age on Roblox
Age verification on Roblox is designed to be quick and easy using Facial Age Estimation technology.Users can verify age directly within the Roblox application by following these steps:
1. You will see a prompt in the app asking you to verify your age.
2. Give Roblox permission to access your device’s camera.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete verification, including positioning your face in the center of the screen and turning left and right.
Especially for users under 13 years of age in Indonesia, this age estimation process can only be carried out with parental permission.The system will send an email to parents to request approval regarding completion of the Facial Age Estimate process.
Parents then need to check and give permission via the Roblox Parental Control menu so that the child can proceed to the next stage.
In addition to using Face Age Estimate, users can verify their age through identity verification.The age verification process may vary depending on applicable regulations.
