The Geminid meteor shower gets its name from the phenomenon’s position in the sky. This meteor shower is most clearly visible in the direction of the constellation Gemini.
This year the Geminid meteor shower occurs on December 4-20, with the peak of the phenomenon on December 14-15.
According to Time and Date, this phenomenon can be seen from 21.00 WIB until early morning. In its peak phase, we are estimated to be able to see around 120 meteors passing in the direction of the Gemini constellation.
The Geminid meteor shower originates from space gravel and dust left behind by the asteroid Phaethon. This asteroid takes 1.4 years to orbit the Sun.
This meteor shower can be seen with the naked eye without the help of special equipment. We just need to look for a dark place that is far from light pollution, and the darker the place, the clearer the meteor will be seen.
For the record, the Moon has partially passed its phase at the peak of the Geminid meteor shower, so its light will not interfere too much with observations in the sky.
However, currently a number of areas have entered the peak of the rainy season so cloud cover could interfere with observing this meteor.
Historically, the Geminids have often been described as a bright and colorful meteor shower. The majority of these meteors appear yellowish in color.
This meteor shower also has a reputation as a fairly slow meteor shower. The reason is, these meteors appear to move at approximately half the speed of Perseid or Leonid meteors in general.
