The volcanic hole was formed by a large eruption hundreds of thousands of years ago and is in the heart of the Tibesti Massif, a 480 kilometer (km) mountain range that stretches in the center of the Sahara Desert, through Chad and Libya.
When viewed from space, the base of the caldera will look like a skull. However, when viewed from ground level, its shape is almost unrecognizable.
The white color of the skull’s mouth, nose and cheeks is the result of natron. The latter is a natural mixture of sodium carbonate decahydrate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and sodium sulfate. This salt mixture is very fragile and looks like cracked paint when viewed at close range.
Meanwhile, the eye area and nostrils are actually cylindrical cones. These are steep hills that form around volcanic vents.
Lastly is the darker area on the left side of the face. It’s the shadow cast by the rim of the crater, which helps give the skull its distinctive shape.
Experts believe Trou au Natron was once a fertile glacial lake. This caldera has been in a state of volcanic dormancy since its formation.
Trou au Natron is not the only volcanic structure that looks like a skull when viewed from space. The Chiltepe Peninsula in Lake Managua, Nicaragua also looks like a skull.
