The first smartphone to use ByteDance’s interactive AI assistant sold out on its first day, after consumers flocked to try out the AI device that has the potential to change the way people use their phones.
The ZTE Nubia M153, an engineering prototype only available for online ordering, is in great demand thanks to the Doubao mobile assistant integrated at the level of the ByteDance operating system. This assistant is said to be able to perform tasks such as ordering a restaurant or editing photos just with voice commands.
Quoted from SCMP, ByteDance and ZTE did not reveal the number of Nubia M153 available for purchase.
A prototype cellphone with limited availability, priced at 3,499 yuan or around Rp. 8.2 million, was sold out on Monday (1/12) evening.Customer service then asks buyers to submit a request for the number of phones they wish to purchase, as production will be adjusted based on request.
The supply shortage immediately caused prices to soar in the used cellphone market. On Xianyu, an online flea market owned by Alibaba Group Holding, the phones were resold for up to 4,999 yuan, or 43 percent more than the original price.
This collaborative effort between parent company TikTok and ZTE also marks a new moment in smartphone marketing, as the main selling point is the smartphone’s software, not its hardware specifications.
Before the AI version of the Nubia phone, Shenzhen-based ZTE gradually lost its relevance in the smartphone market both at home and abroad.
However, it remains unclear whether an AI giant like ByteDance can succeed in the smart hardware market through partnerships with third-party gadget manufacturers.
In a report Monday, Morgan Stanley said the outlook for ByteDance’s AI assistant “looks challenging” because operating system-level integration “weakens the bargaining power of original device manufacturers (OEMs) in the supply chain.”
“Large smartphone manufacturers such as Apple, Huawei and Xiaomi that have strong technological capabilities are more likely to develop these AI assistants independently rather than partnering with ByteDance,” the report said.
IDC China Research Manager Guo Tianxiang agrees with this opinion. He noted that ByteDance would have “difficulty forming deep collaborations with major smartphone manufacturers”.
Guo predicts that the company will be limited to supporting small manufacturers.
For your information, ZTE Nubia is not a well-known brand in the local market and has never entered the top five.
ByteDance’s move into the mobile AI assistant market is its latest attempt to navigate the smartphone market.
A video demonstration released Monday shows how the assistant can tell a story from an image, remove pedestrians from a photo, identify the lowest price for the same product across shopping apps, and make purchases with user consent.
