The DMA requires Meta to give WhatsApp users in Europe the option to connect with users on other instant messaging services who prefer their apps to operate cross-platform.
“BirdyChat and Haiket will be the first third-party services to implement message interoperability with WhatsApp. Meta will continue to work closely with the European Commission and partners in the future,” wrote Meta on its blog page, Friday (14/11).
Meta said that after successful small-scale trials over the past few months, the option for WhatsApp users to chat with users of the BirdyChat and Haiket messaging applications directly through the feature
third-party chats
will soon be launched across Europe.
The launch of this feature marks an important milestone in Meta’s compliance with the European Union’s DMA interoperability requirements.
Later, WhatsApp users in Europe who have registered for this feature on Android and iOS will be able to share messages, images, voice messages, videos and files.
The option to create groups with third-party users will also be available once WhatsApp partners are ready to support this feature.
Furthermore, Meta’s collaboration with BirdyChat and Haiket is the fruit of more than three years of efforts by the European instant messaging platform and the European Commission to develop a solution for third-party chat that meets DMA requirements, while preserving user privacy and security as much as possible.
The three main foundations of the cooperation are protection of user privacy and security, clarity and simplicity of experience, and availability for all European users.
For WhatsApp users, connecting with others on other messaging apps is optional, and third-party chat can be enabled or disabled at any time.
Meta says notifications in the Settings section will appear in the future for users in Europe. This notification will explain how to enable the option
third-party chats
