Meta explained that they removed both chatbots from the WhatsApp app to comply with WhatsApp’s revised platform policies, which were announced last month.
At the time, Meta-owned messenger said it would no longer support AI chatbots that use WhatsApp Business APIs to serve their customers.Instead, they want to save those resources for other types of business.
Quoted from Tech Crunch, this change does not mean businesses cannot use AI to serve customers. However, this change means that WhatsApp will no longer be a distribution channel for AI chatbots, which will impact companies such as Microsoft, OpenAI, Perplexity, and others.
For ChatGPT users, users can connect their accounts so that message history can still be seen on the Chatbot platform.
Meanwhile, Copilot users’ chat history is not retained when they move to the Microsoft platform because access to the chatbot on WhatsApp is not authenticated.
Microsoft recommends users who need to save their conversations for future reference export them using WhatsApp’s built-in tools before the January 15 deadline.
In October, WhatsApp announced changes to its business API policy this week and banned third-party chatbots from its platform.
WhatsApp’s latest move will impact AI assistants for WhatsApp from companies such as OpenAI, Perplexity, Luzia backed by Khosla Ventures, and Poke backed by General Catalyst.
The company has added a new section to its business API terms and conditions targeting “AI providers,” with a focus on multi-purpose chatbots.
These terms and conditions state that Meta will not allow AI model providers to distribute their AI assistants on WhatsApp.
According to Meta, providers and developers of artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning technologies, including but not limited to large language models, generative artificial intelligence platforms, multi-purpose artificial intelligence assistants, or other similar technologies as determined by Meta in its sole discretion (“AI Providers”), are strictly prohibited from accessing or using the WhatsApp Business Solution, either directly or indirectly.
